Full Trip Report

While staying at the Locatelli Hut during our Alta Via 4 trail traverse, Eileen and I made a sidetrip up to the nearby summits of Torre di Toblin / Toblinger Knoten and Sasso di Sesto / Sextner Stein. The former summit involves a fairly short but difficult via ferrata climb, whereas the latter summit involves only a simple hike. Both summits are very popular destinations in the Toblin Pass vicinity.

From the Locatelli Hut, we hiked northward on the Sesto–Toblin Trail, which traverses high above a pretty pair of lakes known as Lago dei Piani / Oberer Bodensee. These lakes occupy a high, grassy bench closely below Toblin Pass.

We crossed through the Sesto–Toblin Saddle and continued hiking under the rugged West Face of Torre di Toblin / Toblinger Knoten. This trail ends at the peak’s northwestern corner, adjacent to an old military cave and memorial plaque. Two other climbers—Wojcek and Olaa, from Poland—were putting on via ferrata gear when we arrived.

Eileen and I donned our harnesses, helmets, and lanyards, then clipped into the first cable of Via Ferrata Torre di Toblin / Klettersteig Toblinger Knoten closely behind Wojcek and Olaa. This challenging route begins with an exposed traverse across the vertical-to-overhanging North Face, then it goes directly upward on highly textured limestone.

We found the scrambling to be physically challenging, as indicated by its rating of 3B (difficult), but well protected. Steel ladders are in place on vertical or featureless parts of the face. Although this was Olaa’s very first via ferrata, she handled all the difficulties like a trooper.

The four of us reached the summit of Torre di Toblin / Toblinger Knoten in early afternoon (1.9 hours + 650 feet / 200 meters from hut). A short time later, two more climbers—Julia and Francesco, from Milan—arrived by way of the easier East Face route.

The six of us made a staggered-start descent the East Face, which involves a combination of cable-assisted down-climbing and unassisted Class 2-3 scrambling. In less than 30 minutes, we were all off the face and back on the approach trail.

Rather than returning to Locatelli Hut directly, Eileen and I hiked back up to the Sesto–Toblin Saddle and then took a short stroll over to the summit of Sasso di Sesto / Sextner Stein, which translates to “sixth stone” for reasons unknown to me. This accessible destination provides great views of Monte Paterno / Paternkofel and Tre Cime di Lavaredo / Drei Zinnen to the south, as well as Torre di Toblin / Toblinger Knoten to the north.
