Full Trip Report
During our overnight stay at the Treviso Hut along Alta Via 2, Eileen, Brooke, Maeve, and I took a lap on the nearby Via Ferrata del Canalone. This short but sporty climbing loop begins and ends at the base of a cliff located immediately upslope from the hut and is reached by a signed spur trail. Metal warning signs on the rock mark the beginning and ending points of the climb.
Our foursome headed up the route with Brooke in the lead, followed by Eileen and Maeve, and with me bringing up the rear. Maeve had never done a Grade 4 (difficult) via ferrata before, but she was excited to give this one a whirl.
After a few moderate moves off the ground, the route gets steep and serious. Much of the rock face is vertical or even slightly overhanging, sporadically interspersed with little grass ledges. Upward progress requires extensive use of rock features in addition to the steel cable and iron rungs.
Upon reaching to top of the short loop (there is a much longer loop that continues up the cliff), we made a short leftward traverse around a corner and then down a few feet to a simple wooden gangplank. This is a good example of the blind faith required for via ferrata climbing!
A separate cable led us down an easier cliff and back to our starting point (1.8 hours for total loop). Although this route had been a big step up in terms of difficulty for Maeve, she handled the challenge like a champ and was looking forward to more!
