Full Trip Report

Eileen and I wrapped up our Jordan adventure vacation by exploring Wadi Mujib, or Mujib Canyon, with our 15-person trekking group, which included executive guides Brooke and James of Adventures Beyond (provisional name); regional guide Mahmoud of Experience Jordan Adventures; and ten other clients: Barbara, Brian, Courtney, Edwin, Elizabeth, Josh, Laura, Melissa, Stephen, and Storm.

Mujib Canyon is a visually stunning gash in the sandstone plateau bordering the Dead Sea. It narrows down to a deep, twisting slot with multiple waterfalls. To provide visitors with a fun and safe experience, a variety of fixed ropes, ladders, rungs, and cleats have been attached to the rock walls. Borrowing from rock-climbing terminology, the exploration of Mujib Canyon could best be described as sport canyoneering.

We began our trek at the Mujib Adventures Center alongside the Dead Sea Highway. This starting point has an elevation of -1280 feet / -390 meters. Yes, those are minus signs; we actually started that far below sea level! Each of us was given a flotation vest and water shoes before heading into the canyon mouth.

Heading Up Mujib Canyon

.

Our trek began as a carefree wade up a shallow creek, but the water became deeper and the current became swifter as we progressed into the canyon. Thankfully, the water was pleasantly warm.

We soon came to the first in a series of small rapids that were equipped with fixed ropes. These locations required a bit of gymnastic maneuvering over slippery rocks.

Farther into the canyon, we came to the first of several waterfalls. Steel ladders allowed for a fairly easy ascent of each waterfall—that is, if climbing a ladder while having water gushing onto your head can be considered easy!

After an hour of steady travel, we passed under a giant chockstone and arrived at our destination: an impressive waterfall measuring approximately 25 feet / 7 meters high. Everyone ducked into a cave behind the waterfall and huddled for a group photo.

To exit the canyon, we were able to simply float on our backs and let the current transport us through the calm portions. This technique worked nicely as long as the creek was more than ankle deep. The waterfalls and rapids, however, required some exciting down-climbing and rope work.

All too soon, we were back at the canyon mouth, thereby ending the adventure activities portion of our Jordan vacation. Brooke, James, and Mahmoud had given each of us an unforgettable experience in an exotic location!
