Some hydration bladders, such as those made by Platypus, utilize a clear plastic food-grade material that minimizes residual taste retention and mold growth. However, the exterior has a tacky surface that makes the bladder more difficult to slide into tight hydration pockets of rucksacks and backpacks. I mitigated this issue by making a simple nylon slip-sleeve for my hydration bladder.
Using lightweight nylon fabric, I cut two panels in the shape of the bladder, leaving a ½-inch hem margin all around, and sewed the panels together. A strip of edging material gives the opening a little more structure. I then sewed on a short Velcro strap that holds the slip-sleeve onto the top of the bladder. The nylon fabric slides easily into snug hydration pockets and also gives my rucksack contents a little protection from possible bladder leakage.
