Washington’s Blue Corn Specials

Back in 2004, I became inspired to identify and document the most classic springtime backcountry ski descent routes in Washington State. My selection criteria were fairly simple: Each descent had to be of moderate difficulty (roughly equivalent to a “blue square” run at a ski resort) and, therefore, within the ability of average skiers. It had to have at least 1500 vertical feet of drop and typically be in good condition during the springtime “corn snow” season, when weather and daylight are generally more conducive to backcountry outings. It had to be relatively free of excessive hazards, not involve an unreasonably arduous approach, and have a scenic alpine setting.

I subsequently selected twelve backcountry descent routes that I regarded as having a widespread classic status among local backcountry skiers. Collectively, these became known as Blue Corn Specials. I then prepared a topographic reference map for each route, along with a brief written commentary. My original document pages are reproduced in the photo galleries below.

Over a period of several decades, I sought to complete each of the Blue Corn Special ski descents—albeit in a rather casual fashion; to date, I’ve managed to complete only eight of the twelve. Perhaps I will eventually complete the list, or perhaps not. Honestly, if I were to create such a list today, I’m not sure that I would select the same twelve descent routes I selected in 2004, but I still believe those original selections constitute a worthy goal for most backcountry skiers.

Here is a list of the the twelve descent routes, with hyperlinks to an overview page and applicable trip reports:
