Major Peaks are determined on the basis of six criteria: Elevation, Projection, Prominence, Isolation, Visual Appeal, and Classic Status. Using these criteria, there are 222 Major Peaks in the Cascades and Olympic Mountains of Washington and British Columbia.

Major peaks are arranged in various groupings, depending on their attributes.
- Special Groups: The cream of the crop; first-ballot mountain peaks that are rich in specific attributes.
- Geographic Groups: The 34 principal geographic mountain subregions in the Cascades and Olympic Mountains.
- Wild-Card Groups: Alpine gems that don't fit into any of the geographic or special groups.
How to use the Interactive Major Peaks Constellation Map
- Hover over a constellation or peak name to see a list of associated peaks.
- Click on a Major Peak constellation in the map to view all climbing trip reports for that group.
- Click on a Major Peak group name in the sidebar to highlight the constellation on the map and display the individual peaks.
